Do you have concerns about your child's feet, ankles or knees?
Children are susceptible to many foot and leg problems as they grow. It is important if you have any concerns in regards to your child’s feet, lower legs, gait or other concerns to speak to us to arrange further investigation.
Our podiatrists are highly trained in assessing, diagnosing and managing the care of your child's foot/leg problems. We understand how daunting it can be for both parent and child to visit a doctor and so we have a very relaxed and friendly approach when we see children.
Babies, toddlers, junior school children and high school teenagers can all benefit from podiatry treatment at Southport Podiatry Clinic.

Sever's Disease
What is Sever's Disease?
Sever's disease is a common cause of heel pain in active children. Sever's disease also known as calcaneal apophysitis, occurs when the growth plate of the heel is aggravated or inflamed by excessive forces during early adolescence.
Sever's disease is a common cause of heel pain in physically active growing kids. It usually occurs during periods of higher growth or growth spurts in adolescence. Sever’s disease can be in the approximately 2-year period in early puberty when kids grow most rapidly. This growth spurt can begin anytime between the ages of 8 to 13 for girls and 10 to 15 for boys
Most importantly Sever’s disease has no lasting impact on the adolescent athlete, other than pain. However other conditions also need to be excluded.
Symptoms
As a parent, you may notice your child limping while walking or running awkwardly. If you ask them to rise onto their tip toes, their heel pain usually increases. Heel pain can be felt in one or both heels in Sever's disease.
Treatment
Your podiatrist or physiotherapist can assess your child's feet and guide you in the best management of your child's condition. We recommend that your child should never go barefooted during the painful stages of Sever's disease, activity should be modified or reduced to reduce impact, footwear should be reviewed, with the mechanics of the foot addressed.
